A culture of conspiracy

This is something on the subject of conspiracy theories and conspiracy thinking that permeates our society. I've translated Archy, the blog of John J. McKay article "The intellectual dishonesty of Allan Quist." Links and emphasis are mine.

Too often, a little conspiracy thinking is a thin wedge that opens the door to a lot of conspiracy thinking. Michael Barkun

wrote about this phenomenon in his 2003 book, A Culture of Conspiracy ("A culture of conspiracy"). Barkun has written several books on American apocalyptic sects and religious beliefs of racist groups such as Aryan Nations . Investigating these groups was surprised to find that believers in a particular way of thinking often marginal hugged each other, unrelated, thought marginal. Do not mean to imply, to reproduce this text, which all who believe in some form of conspiracy theory are extremists or lunatics who only see conspiracies everywhere, but I found it interesting that you were able to verify, through investigation methodical, that there is indeed a common thread and a correlation between beliefs Conspiranoids.

Going to the movies, it is generally done with few expectations for the film, not to be disappointed later. Angels and Demons not invalidate this idea: expected very little of it , and that's exactly what I got.

In criticizing, I like to weigh the good and bad. Among other things, leads to a more fluid narrative style, with counterpoints and weights. With Angels and Demons , however, feel that this way of writing with a result sarcastic. If I said that the film had good clothes and good scenery but a bad script and a boring argument, the impression is that it would be an absolutely superficial production.

The truth is hard, but without sarcasm, that is. Angels and Demons , filmed in Rome and the Vatican, with the bottom of the death of a pope and a conclave of cardinals, delivers a stunning picture in a tour of the pomp and majesty of the center of the Catholic world a sublime moment for believers. On the other hand, the scenes in the giant particle accelerator, CERN, like those in the Vatican archives, no defined environment, identificatory color of gravitas. The writer's ability to award feelings to places is nil.

I will not spend a lot of regrets to the scientific credibility of the film. The well-known inability of the Catholic Church to tolerate (anything that looks like a) criticism is combined with the lack of sense of humor characteristic of fanatics of all kinds to make Angels & Demons white unmerited accusations that is "anti-Catholic." The truth is that the film leaves too well stop at the Church and its hierarchy. Not even allow the character of Robert Langdon more than a tinge sputtering agnostic to justify their non-Catholic (almost as if to give encouragement to the followers of the apophatic theology), and Catholics in the film, the most rigid and intolerant end up being good.

As for the plot, there is the strange case that is at once too simple and too complicated. The system by which the actors are symbolic clues in the Eternal City is contrived, schematic, a device worthy of a detective story juveniles (and emphasized gestures and exclamations of the same genus by the protagonists). Ill have endless physical and mental resources, and have received all eventualities. Good too, to the point where the elaboradísimo deception can be solved by a professor of religious symbology and physics and also happens to have an amazing knowledge of forensic medicine. With the exception of some obvious pitfalls, everything is in the right place, everything is clean, pointing where it should, everything is predictable. So predictable, so easy is all that tension in Angels and Demons is purely accidental: if the researcher had begun its task 15 minutes before, all painstakingly articulated criminal plot would have collapsed.

Angels and Demons is a cumbersome Rube Goldberg machine whose final product is boring and trivial: the bad guys are defeated at the last minute and literally, there is nothing new under the sun.
